While the European LCS got it’s week 1 technical problems fixed, unfortunately the games weren’t of the same calibre as last week. Six of the eight matches played this weekend were one-sided games dominated by overly passive play that lead to long drawn out games. However it did help elucidate the top teams from the weaker ones.
Evil Geniuses started week 2 off with a bang: decimating DragonBorns in 38 minutes, followed by a decisive performance in the highly anticipated week 1 rematch vs. SK Gaming. Their win over SK would cement their 1st place standing for week 2, but they weren’t done yet. On day 2 we saw Evil Geniuses eviscerate the up and coming GIANTS! Gaming, taking the win in 35 minutes without a single champion on their team dying. At 5-1 in the season, EG is looking like the clear favorite for Riot’s European LCS.
Gambit Gaming was able to bounce back in week 2 going 2-0 and improving their overall record to 3-2. Some were worried for GBG after their poor performance last week, but it seemed like they were able to put that behind them and focus on this week’s games. They take second place in this week’s standings, barely edging out over SK Gaming. SK had a disappointing weekend after a great start last week, going 1-2 with losses to both EG and dark horse team DragonBorns. Giants took a very harsh loss to EG, getting outplayed the whole game, but they were able to make an unlikely comeback and beat the Copenhagen Wolves to go 1-1 on the week. Copenhagen Wolves continued their ongoing struggle; their record now 0-5 after 3 more losses this week.
Team of the week: Evil Geniuses – An easy choice. They were able to go 3-0 this week and absolutely dominated every team they played including avenging their only loss vs SK Gaming.
Game of the week: Evil Geniuses vs. SK Gaming – In a week filled with one sided matches, this game stood out as the top match. EG and SK were 3-1 when this match was played, with the winner securing the first place spot for this week. EG was able to take the win after controlling much of the early game followed by their well-known late game domination.
Matches to watch for next week: Two matches stand out next week, both taking place on the first day. First up we’ll have Gambit Gaming trying to get revenge on GIANTS! Gaming after Giants was able to steal a win from them in week 1. Then later that day we’ll get what should be a great matchup in Evil Geniuses vs. Fnatic. Fnatic has only played 3 games this season, going 2-1 with their only loss coming from Gambit. There are high expectations for them, but will they be able to stop the seemingly unstoppable EG?
