MVP DongRaeGu and STX Innovation were able to advance into the round of 16 from Group H. The fan favorite of the group and foreign hope, EG Stephano RC, took third place in the group after losing 0-2 to Innovation in the first match and then losing to him again in 1-2 in the last match. DongRaeGu would take first place in the group, beating both StarTale Hack and Innovation, while Innovation would take second after beating Stephano twice.
Stephano has no answer for Innovation
Fan favorite Stephano was unable to solve Innovation and went 1-4 against him in Group H. The first game saw Innovation use his superior multitasking to drop and harass multiple bases of Stephano in the late game. Each drop got Innovation farther ahead until he had enough to crush Stephano’s Infestor/Ultralisk/Zergling army. In game 2 Innovation went for a Blue Flame Hellion all-in and Stephano was unprepared for it, sending him to the loser’s match. In the loser’s match he’d face Hack who he dealt with quite easily. He was able to dominate Hack with superior engagements in the first game and hit a great Roach timing in game 2 to take the series 2-0.
In the final match of the night he’d have to face Innovation again and once again he had no answer for him. Game 1 had Innovation use a Double Proxy Barracks rush to take a quick win. Game 2 had Stephano play a really nice game, going into his Infestor/Ultralisk/Zergling army again, but this time taking great engagements and getting a win. However, in game 3 Innovation would go for a heavy Bio timing attack, hurting Stephano’s economy with the first wave and killing him with the second. Stephano falls down to Code A where he’ll have to work his way back up to Code S, but it’s unknown if Stephano will actually participate in the GSL next season.
DongRaeGu and Innovation advance, Hack also falls
DongRaeGu was able to dominate Group H, showing off some amazing ZvT play and going 4-0 in the group. In game 1 against Hack, he was able to beat him in a long macro game where he just picked apart Hack at every opportunity. Game 2 had DongRaeGu defend a Marine/Marauder/Hellion all-in attack with ease and go on to crush Hack and advance to the winner’s match. In the winner’s match he’d face Innovation and crush him 2-0 with some of the best ZvT play DongRaeGu has shown in a long time, if not ever. We’ll have to wait until next round to see how strong his other matchups are right now, but if he’s able to get some Terrans in his group next round, he should be a lock to get to the round of 8.
Innovation looked great in his first games against Stephano, but seemed to struggle against DongRaeGu and in the second match vs Stephano. Nonetheless, he’ll advance to the round of 16 where he’ll probably have to face more Zergs. If he does, he’ll need to play better than he did today.
