StarTale Curious and SK MC were able to advance into the round of 8 for their last chance at a Wings of Liberty GSL Championship. Curious got through with 2-0 wins over both MC and FXO GuMiho. MC lost his first match but was able to come back and advance by beating both LG-IM Losira and GuMiho 2-0.
Saving the best for last; one of the best Starcraft 2 games ever.
Losira and GuMiho put on a show for everyone watching with an epic 1 hour 27 minute (blizzard time) game in the final game of their series. The game started with a 2 Barracks bunker rush that Losira held off quite easily at first, but then lost quite a few Zerglings to in the aftermath. Both players ended up close to even after that and transitioned into tech’ing and macro’ing up. Both players kept expanding and macro’ing, taking up much of the map. The midgame consisted of GuMiho dropping all over and Losira barely being able to defend. But Losira was able to defend each time and eventually built up his scary Brood Lord/Infestor/Ultralisk army and started taking out GuMiho’s bases. GuMiho would fight back with ghosts though and was able to pick off Infestors and Brood Lords with snipes. The final big engagement came around 50 minutes into the game and left Curious with 1 Ultralisk, 2 Queens, a bunch of Corruptors, and quite a few Spine Crawlers. However that was enough to whittle down GuMiho’s army and force a weird situation where GuMiho was long distance mining the last few minerals left in his base while Losira sat waiting because he lost all his drones. Eventually GuMiho was able to build a few Siege Tanks and slow push the Spine Crawlers to eventually get the win. A must watch game though for those with GSL tickets.
Curious and MC to the round of 8, GuMiho and Losira down to Code A
A heavy underdog in the group, Curious was able to come out and win against both MC and GuMiho 2-0 to advance to his first ever GSL Code S Round of 8. In his first games against MC, Curious was able to shutdown an Immortal/Sentry all-in with some great defensive play in game 1, then dominated a long macro game in game 2. Game 1 against GuMiho would also be a short game; this time with Curious hitting a Roach timing that GuMiho wasn’t prepared for. Curious showed off his great macro play in game 2 as well and was able to take a win after gaining small leads throughout the game.
MC was also able to advance with some convincing wins over Losira in the loser’s match and GuMiho in the final match. MC becomes the only Protoss in the round of 8, although Parting will have a chance to join him if he can get out of his group. Both Losira and GuMiho seemed drained after their extremely long series. They’ll fall down to Code A where they’ll have to win one match to get back into Code S, otherwise face the unforgiving Up and Down groups.
Round of 16 Group D preview
On Friday we have what is probably the most anticipated match in the round of 16. A rematch of the Blizzard Cup finals between StarTale Life and his former teammate SKT T1 Parting will open the night and the winner is almost universally expected to win the group and become a heavy favorite to win this final Wings of Liberty GSL Season. On the other side of the group we have Azubu Bboong and Samsung KHAN RorO, both Zerg underdogs in the group but looking to pull off an upset. Can Life continue his recent dominance? Can Parting finally solve Life? Will Bboong shock everyone by getting out of the group? Can RorO continue the great play we’ve seen from KeSPA players in the round of 16? All these questions will be answered on Friday when the last GSL WoL group is played.
