STX Soul Innovation and fan favorite Liquid Taeja were able to advance into the round of 8 for their final shots at a Wings of Liberty GSL Championship. Innovation dominated the group, going 2-1 vs Taeja followed by a 2-0 win against the group favorite MVP DongRaeGu. StarTale Bomber ended up in last place with a 0-4 showing after losing 0-2 to both DongRaeGu and Taeja.
Taeja escapes the group of death
Taeja was barely able to escape the group after Innovation sent him down to the loser’s match. He showed off some great TvT against both Innovation and Bomber, losing 1-2 to Innovation but beating Bomber 2-0. Then in the final match of the night he showed off some amazing TvZ play that was just enough to beat the ZvT expert DongRaeGu. Taeja’s TvZ is rated as the best in the world right now and it certainly showed tonight.
Could this finally be Taeja’s season? Even after losing to Innovation, it didn’t look like he was far from beating him and a rematch could go either way. The only person that may stand in Taeja’s way this season is StarTale Life, the best Zerg and arguably the best player in the world. Will Taeja’s great TvZ play be enough to stop him? It hasn’t been so far as Life has a 7-0 record over him in these last 4 months. But if Taeja can find a way to get past him or if someone else takes Life out, this could be Taeja’s season.
Innovation to the round of 8, DongRaeGu and Bomber down to Code A
Innovation looked unstoppable tonight. After losing to DongRaeGu just a week before this group, he was able to come back and completely dominate him with a 2-0 win to advance to the round of 8. Bomber, who was one of the favorites of the group coming into it, failed to impress today; he went 0-4 on the night and fell out in last place. DongRaeGu also struggled tonight, making just a few too many mistakes against Innovation and Taeja. Both Bomber and DongRaeGu will have to win one match to get back into Code S, if they fail than they’ll have to go through the dreaded up and down groups.
Round of 16 Group B preview
On Friday we’ll have the second group of the round of 16 featuring Squirtle, Azubu Symbol, MarineKing Prime, and Woongjin Stars Soulkey. Squirtle seemed to struggle vs Azubu Bboong in the last round, but he was still confident enough in his PvZ to pick Bboong’s teammate Symbol at group selection. Symbol looked great last round losing only to Life, but showing off some great ZvP when beating Creator Prime. Everyone expected MarineKing to get picked early, but he ended up getting picked relatively late in the group selection. MarineKing was forced to pick Soulkey as he was one of the last people left to be picked, and it may turn out to be an unfortunate situation for MarineKing. Soulkey looked great last round going 4-0 against two Terrans, including Taeja who has arguably the best TvZ in the world right now.
