EGS Battle of Amsterdam day one roundup
The European console CoD community descended on a bitterly cold Amsterdam this weekend for the European Game Series’ “Battle of Amsterdam” Modern Warfare 3 LAN event. Day one featured teams from all over Europe, as they battled it out in groups to start off the 2500 Euro tournament.
EGS opted for a group stage to start the tournament, before moving to a double elimination format. All but one of the groups had three members, with each of the top teams separated into different groups. This system meant that many teams, particularly the top teams, have had a fairly easy run through the first day, with no top teams facing each other at all, let alone on stream.
Epsylon, Brutality, apeX.Divinity (apeX.Germany) and Who Are We (Fariko.Yin) all swept their respective groups. apeX.Pro played with their coach for their first few games whilst Gotaga travelled, and they still managed to sweep their group 3-0, despite having the largest group with 3 opponents. The well known Team Infused became the first and only real upset of the day, after losing to Spain’s premier players, Pain Gaming. Infused can be excused, however, after apparently running into some headset issues. After solving their handicap they managed to breeze through the first round of the winner’s bracket against Team Kermit, reaching WB round 2, where the other top teams had reached by placing at the top of their groups.

Winner’s bracket round 2 went largely as one would expect; apeX.Pro, 3DMAX, Brutality, Who Are We all managed convincing 3-0 series wins, whilst Infused and Epsylon managed3-1 victories. Pain Gaming however, after winning their group stage against Infused, had a poor showing against the French team, eXtensive. Pain will be disappointed with this result, as will their fans, who dominated the stream chat with support. apeX.Divinely (formerly apeX.Germany) seemed to overturn their history of bad LAN results by topping their group. They quickly returned back to earth after facing the Portugese side, 3DMAX, losing 3-0. All is not lost though; they are one of the strongest contenders in the loser’s bracket alongside Pain and VYE.

The real competition starts to heat up on Sunday with the winner’s bracket quarter finals. The pick of the bunch will be apeX.Pro versus Who Are We, and Infused facing 3DMAX. Epsylon will face their French rivals eXtensive whilst Brutality face the un-pronounceable Dutch team “Wij Schrijven Dit Op”.
In day two the action will hopefully get going for the viewers, with some big games inbound. What we all want to see most though, is for someone to challenge apeX, who have done nothing but dominate the MW3 season so far.
